About Dan Komarzec

Workshop Instructor

daninthe80s1.jpgDan is lifelong musician with over 40 years experience – playing piano at the age of 6, then taking on various brass instruments through his early school days. He eventually found his musical calling though when the Jazz program at his high school was in need someone to cover bass in the rhythm section.

Having strong interest in all music, Dan immersed himself into the Detroit rock circuit at rare age of 14 years, playing bass in various rock groups through the 80’s; he then continued with his music studies and performance at MTU, having studied bass under both Karyn Quinn and Mike Irish in the Jazz Lab Band, studied trombone under Jeff Bell-Hanson and Milt Olsson in the Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra and headed the low-end in the regionally popular cover band ‘The Heat’ throughout the 90’s.

Having graduated with a Computer Science degree from MTU, Dan began his career working as a software analyst/programmer working for Schneider National in Green Bay, WI, but with music still at heart, he found time to free-lance as a musician in the Fox Cities area for more than 15 years.

He returned to the Houghton area in 2009, where he continues to have a dual career in both computers & music, and is an avid supporter of music in the community – such as running sound for the annual Houghton Arts and Music Festival.

Dan assisted in Rock camp 2010 as a workshop instructor and is thrilled to return as a bass instructor in 2012 he currenty plays jazz with local musicians, covered bass with the popular horn band Captain Woody Boogie and the Pirates of Groove and plays in the up and coming rock group ‘NineOSix’.
